The Peruvian Congress voted this Friday in favor of dismiss President Dina Boluarteone of the most unpopular leaders in the world, in a night session convened hours after several political parties from across the political spectrum called for her dismissal through four motions of censure and gathered the necessary support to carry out the initiative.
Legislators voted in favor of debating her dismissal due to “permanent moral incapacity” to hold office and summoned her to appear before Congress an hour later. However, Boluarte did not appear and legislators had enough votes to proceed with an accelerated impeachment process.
The departure of the Peruvian president, six months before general elections are held, is framed in a context of serious crisis of insecurity and violence that the country is going through, as well as the lack of effective measures to confront organized crime. The erosion of her image and her mandate was such that parties that supported her until now, such as Fuerza Popular and Renovación Popular, voted in favor of her dismissal.
According to the agency Efethe Peruvian Legislature approved the four motions to remove Boluarte from power with 122 votes in favor out of a total of 130a figure much higher than the 87 that were required for the initiative to be successful, in a session where the president did not appear before the chamber to exercise her defense.
The first female president of Peru Thus ended a term of two years and ten months since she assumed the Presidency at the end of 2022 to succeed the leftist Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), of whom she was his vice president, and remained in power thanks to the support of a group of right-wing forces that control Congress and who now promoted and supported her departure.
In April of last year, the Peruvian Congress had rejected two motions of censure against Boluarte as a result of the Rolex luxury watch scandal, a case in which several journalistic reports accused the president of illicit enrichment and failure to declare assets.
