The unemployment rate in the euro zone stood at 6.3% in September this year, stabilizing compared to the same month in 2024 and August 2025, leaving Portugal below the average, with an annual drop to 6%.

Data published today by the statistical office of the European Union (EU) reveals that, in September 2025, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the euro zone was 6.3%, stable compared to August 2025 and September 2024.

In the EU as a whole, the unemployment rate was 6% in September 2025, also stable compared to August 2025 and above the 5.9% recorded in September 2024.

Portugal was below the average for the single currency area, recording an unemployment rate of 6% in September this year, which compares with 6.5% in the same month of 2024 and 5.9% in August 2025.

In total, Eurostat estimates that 13.246 million people in the EU, of which 11.003 million in the eurozone, were unemployed in September 2025.

Compared to September 2024, unemployment increased by 227 thousand in the EU and by 187 thousand in the eurozone.

Compared to August 2025, unemployment increased by 63 thousand in the EU and by 65 thousand in the eurozone.

As for youth unemployment, in September 2025, a total of 2.866 million young people (under the age of 25) were unemployed in the EU, of which 2.282 million in the eurozone.

In September 2025, the youth unemployment rate was 14.8% in the EU, stable compared to August 2025, and 14.4% in the eurozone, an increase from 14.3% the previous month.

Compared to August 2025, youth unemployment increased by 10,000 in the EU and by 23,000 in the eurozone.

Compared to September 2024, youth unemployment decreased by 121 thousand in the EU and by 79 thousand in the eurozone.

By gender, in September 2025, the female unemployment rate was 6.1% in the EU and the male unemployment rate was 5.8%, both stable compared to the previous month.

In the eurozone, the unemployment rate for women was 6.5%, stable compared to August 2025, and the unemployment rate for men was 6.2%, an increase from 6.1% the previous month.
