In the coming days, the Government will launch a competition to requalify 237 run-down schools, which will force the closure of some schools or the transfer of students to monoblocks, the Minister of Education revealed this Wednesday, October 15th.
“We will very soon launch a competition for 237 schools”, revealed the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 4th edition of the Teaming Club Conference, which brings together the Centers of Excellence of the European Union’s “Teaming for Excellence” program.
The cost of these works is estimated at 850 million euros, with 40% of schools are located in the Lisbon region, “a region with a very large deficit in human resources and infrastructure”the minister explained today.
According to Fernando Alexandre, in some cases, the works will force “the closure of schools”, which has already happened across the country, but also the transfer of students to monoblocks.
There are schools without any intervention “for 40 or 50 years” and, therefore, there are cases in which having classes in monoblocks is better than being in the classroom: “It will always be a transitional situation, but often the monoblocks have better conditions than the classrooms where the students were”.
This new competition is part of an investment plan “of one billion euros to be carried out by the end of the decade”, added the minister, explaining that The idea is to have “dozens of schools to be recovered every year”.
