Presidential candidate Jorge Pinto said this Saturday, November 1, that his candidacy was “missed”, that he will be a “distinctive voice” in these elections and that the country needs a President of the Republic who will be a “democratic counterweight”.
Jorge Pinto, 38 years old and deputy for Livre, was speaking at the presentation of his candidacy for Belém, in Amarante (Porto district), the municipality where he is from.
The candidate explained that he decided to go for it because “there was no extra-party candidacy that would bring together the left” and could regain the Presidency of the Republic.
His candidacy, he stressed, “was missed”. It is a candidacy “from the democratic, environmentalist, European, regionalist and globalist left, a feminist, anti-racist candidacy, an uncompromising defender of human rights, dignity and decency”.
“We need this and I couldn’t turn my face away from this fight. Today I am very convinced that this was the right decision. My candidacy, our candidacy, will be a distinctive voice in these elections”, he stated, guaranteeing that he is “proudly left-wing” and that the “left is not a drawer, but a window”.
In a scenario in which the country has “a parliamentary majority of more than two thirds on the right and extreme right, both right-wing regional governments, Lisbon, Porto and Braga also with right-wing presidencies”, Jorge Pinto highlighted that this presidential election “is particularly important”.
“Because we need a President of the Republic who is a democratic counterweight. A President of the Republic who has the courage and clarity to say what he will do if our regime and the foundations of our regime are under threat”, he stressed.
By the way, he left his “first promise”.
“If in parliament there is a temptation to have a drastic revision of our Constitution, carried out only by the right and the extreme right, a drastic revision that did not go through the elections, that did not go through the electoral campaign, that was not discussed with the Portuguese, here is my promise: I will call the Portuguese back to the polls so that this discussion can take place and for the Portuguese to say whether or not they are comfortable with a drastic revision of our Constitution”, assured.
