The new Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, stated this Tuesday, October 28, during a meeting with the North American President, her intention to nominate Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, the White House announced.
Takaichi joins the list of foreign leaders allied with the President of the United States, who requested the award from Donald Trump, in recognition of his mediation in several international conflicts, including the recent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
Trump expressed several times his desire to win this award in 2025, which ended up being awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
“Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the President’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the end of the private meeting between Trump and Takaichi in Tokyo.
Earlier, during the opening speech of the meeting – part of which was open to the press – the conservative prime minister praised Trump’s work in mediating the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as the “unprecedented historic achievement” in the Middle East.
“The Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe spoke to me many times about his dynamic diplomacy”, said Takaichi, evoking the good friendship that Trump and the Japanese ruler, assassinated in 2022, maintained during the Republican’s first term.
For the rest, Sanae Takaichi took the opportunity to offer the US president a golf club used by Shinzo Abe. Displayed in a glass display case alongside a gold-covered golf ball and bag signed by highly-rated Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama, the club was just one in a series of references to Trump’s bond with Abe during the US president’s first term.
