The mayor of Setúbal, André Martins, announced this Thursday, October 23rd, that he will resign from his mandate as councilor in that municipality, for which he was elected on October 12th, being replaced by number two on the CDU list, Nuno Costa.

“I do not recognize political dignity in whoever will assume the responsibilities of president of the Chamber [Maria das Dores Meira] and, therefore, I will not take office in this executive”, the still president of the sadino municipality told the Lusa agency.

Contacted by Lusa, number two on the list led by André Martins confirmed that he will take on the role of councilor in light of the current president’s resignation.

“I will be an active element in presenting proposals and evaluating proposals presented by other political forces, in defense of the interests of the population of Setúbal”, said Nuno Costa.

In an interview with the newspaper O Setubalense, published this Thursday, in which he announced his resignation from his mandate, André Martins accuses elected president Maria das Dores Meira of being untruthful in the controversy surrounding the audit requested by the current city council executive into the use of the municipality’s credit cards.

“When someone [Maria das Dores Meira] comes to say in a media outlet, on television, that an audit that had been approved by the City Council to be carried out between January 1, 2017 and October 30, 2024 and when, already elected, it comes to say that the mayor decided to tell the company to only carry out the assessment until October 2021, he is the one who was certainly capable of doing this”, explained André Martins.
