The president of the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP), Fernando Gomes, would like a “greater investment” from the Government in the High Performance Centers (CAR), but showed understanding regarding the “limitations of the country itself” and explained that the Jamor CAR is not covered in the requalification process… as it is managed by the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ).
“It was perfectly defined that it was 10 million. If you ask me if it is little or would you like more, it is obvious that we would all like this investment to be greater so that these centers would be of exceptional excellence, but we obviously know the limitations that the country itself has in terms of its investment capabilities”, stated the leader.
Fernando Gomes hosted the contract signing ceremony for the rehabilitation and equipping of the High Performance Centers (CAR), which mobilized 10 million of a total package of 65 million euros contracted between the Portuguese Government, the COP and the Paralympic Committee of Portugal (CPP), within the scope of the operationalization of the 2024-28 Sports Development Contract-Programme, and praised the State’s effort in this matter.
The event took place at the COP headquarters, in Lisbon, and consisted of the signing of contracts relating to the CARs located in Maia, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real de Santo António, while the agreement relating to the Pocinho CAR will be signed at a later date.
In September, the first five contracts had been initialed, corresponding to the CARs of Anadia, Caldas da Rainha, Golegã, Montemor-o-Velho and Rio Maior (Desmor) and, later, also the CARs of Nazaré, Peniche, São Jacinto (Aveiro), Vila Nova de Gaia and Vila Nova de Foz Coa.
