The Institute of Research in Vulcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR) of the Azores raised the alert level in the western volcanic system of Terceira Island, “in the phase of instability”. The information was given by Ivar himself on his Facebook page. Following the ordinary meeting on seismic activity in September, the Ivar crisis office states that it has risen V1’s alert level to V2 in the western fissural volcanic system of the third, “due to crustal deformation data.”
IVAR’s V1 alert refers to “weak activity, slightly above reference levels, of tectonic, hydrothermal and/or magmatic origin”, while the V2 level refers to a “instability phase” volcanic system, with “moderate activity, clearly above reference levels, tectonic, hydrothermal and/or magmatic”.
Ivar also decided to maintain a warning situation V2 on the Santa Barbara volcano, also on Terceira Island. On Terceira Island, seismic activity, “although of low magnitude, remained clearly above reference levels, particularly in the Santa Barbara volcano and the West Fissural Volcanic System of the third,” says Ivar.
The Institute also recalls that September was “the highest seismic activity in the year 2025”, and that “although not intense, some crustal deformation continued in the area of the Santa Barbara volcano”.
