The liberalized electricity market totaled around 5.8 million customers, for an estimated consumption of 45 terawatt-hours (TWh) in August, a year-on-year increase of 2% in customers and 8.1% in consumption.

According to data from the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE) released today, the free electricity market gained 7,258 customers in August, compared to July, while the regulated market lost 3,828 customersfor a total of 822,069.

Just this month, around 69,000 customers changed suppliers in the liberalized market, and almost 4,000 customers switched from regulated supply to one on the market.

At the end of August, consumption on the free market represented around 95% of total consumption recorded in mainland Portugal.

In terms of market share, EDP Comercial maintained its position as the main operator in the free market in terms of number of customers (59.6%) and consumption (37.8%).

In the industrial customer segment, EDP remained the supplier with the largest share of consumption (26.5%) and Iberdrola the leader in supplying large consumers (26.1%).
