The far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), led by anti-Islamic MP Geert Wilders, and the centrist D66 party are tied after 98% of the votes counted in the Dutch general election.
The nearly complete count showed each party won 26 seats in Wednesday’s elections.
The difference between the two main parties is just over 2,000 votes across the country, according to the vote count released by Dutch national news agency ANP, cited by Dutch media outlets.
The tight result is expected to lead to delays in the beginning of the process of forming a new government coalition. No Dutch election has previously ended with two parties tied for the lead.
Wilders’ party is forecast to lose 11 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives, while D66, led by Rob Jetten, will gain 11, according to the vote count.
