The Superliga (already renamed A22) continues to make people talk and is now taking on a million-dollar profile. According to the Spanish newspaper AS, the value of the compensation requested by Real Madrid and the A22 organization is 4.5 billion euros.
The action results from the decision of the Madrid Court, known on Wednesday, which rejected the appeals brought by UEFA, LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation against the decision of Commercial Court No. 17 of Madrid, which concluded that FIFA and UEFA abused their dominant position and, therefore, must “cease their anti-competitive conduct”.
The initial process began with a complaint from the Superliga, supported by Real Madrid, who guarantees that he tried, during this year, to schedule several meetings with UEFA in order to find a solution, but without success, having now decided to take legal action. “We will continue to work for the good of world football and its fans. At the same time we will ask UEFA for the amounts of the damages suffered”, can be read in the letter from the meringues.
This is not the first time that UEFA has been defeated in court, which continues to fail to comply with the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), which, in December 2021, determined that “FIFA and UEFA rules on the prior authorization of club football competitions, such as the Super League, violate Union Law by abusing a dominant position and impeding free competition in the market”.
But the body led by Aleksander Čeferin continues to devalue the court decisions, arguing that the Spanish court’s decision, subject to appeal, “does not validate the abandoned Superliga project announced in 2021, nor does it weaken the current UEFA authorization rules, adopted in 2022 and updated in 2024, which remain fully in force”.
