The presidential candidate, with public support from the Socialist Party since Sunday, also saw João Soares and Francisco Assis support his candidacy, joined by former ministers such as Adalberto Campos Fernandes, Alberto Martins, Ana Jorge, mayor Basílio Horta and the recently elected president in Évora, Carlos Zorrinho. Seguro highlighted the presence of Duarte Cordeiro, Manuel Alegre and Vasco Lourenço and assumed the “commitment to unite, listen to and represent all Portuguese people without exception”, with a “sense of state and dedication to the public cause”.
“The book is a tribute and a starting point for trust to be the basis of politics. I will always be one of you, I will always be your voice”, he stated.
The secretary-general, José Luís Carneiro, and other deputies attended the parliamentary days in Tâmega e Sousa, and as such were still unable to attend the event.
Seguro was received with applause and tried to greet many of his supporters. Francisco Assis, together with Seguro and author Rui Gomes, presented the work.
“Personal, political and civic decency, the country needs a president with this profile. He was linked to the associative movement, we were almost always in agreement. We were in disagreement, when I ran against him and lost. It has been a common path that we have followed. A politician has to speak the truth and all democracies have to be protected from demagogues. And demagogues are not just in extremism. There is no need to hide the origins of socialism democracy to attract supporters from various quarters”, stated Assis, adding: “It is necessary to maintain balances and societies have reached political, social and cultural imbalances. There is political radicalism in contemporary societies. We are not condemned to the victory of the extremists and that is why I am safe.”
