MURDERED schoolgirl Lola Daviet’s dad “died of grief” after learning his daughter had been tortured and suffocated to death, according to his widow.

Dahbia Benkired, 27, an Algerian migrant living in France, has confessed to the twisted abuse and murder of 12-year-old Lola, and is currently on trial at the Paris Assizes.

Tormented father Johan Daviet died in February last year due to heavy drinking, which he picked up in the wake of Lola’s murder three years ago, his wife Delphine told court on Wednesday.

His daughter was found to have suffered almost 40 wounds – including a partially severed head and neck slashed with scissors – alongside sexual abuse.

Delphine, facing Benkired through floods of tears, said that Johan, 49, had “died of grief” after being destroyed by “his demons”.

She said he had stopped drinking alcohol altogether, but turned back to the bottle the day Lola was murdered.

Delphine, who begged for the “monster devil” Benkired to be given a life sentence, said: “He drank from morning to night.”

Before he died, Johan hung a letter on the door of the apartment Benkired was using, and where Lola was allegedly mutilated.

He wrote: “My darling, I still don’t understand why there was so much cruelty and barbarity towards you, you were so kind.

“I can’t wait to see you again. Your dad, who loves you for life.”

It is just Delphine and Lola’s brother, Thibault, left of the family now.

Delphine said: “I feel guilty, I couldn’t save my Lola. My husband and my son also blame themselves a lot.

“I tell myself I’m lucky to have my son, Thibault, by my side, otherwise I might not be here anymore.

“I remind you that I lost my Lola, my husband, my job, my home. My whole life has collapsed. I sometimes wonder how I’m still standing.”

When the Judge asked: “What keeps you alive?”, Delphine replied: “My son.”

The family’s life was shattered when, on October 14 2022,  Lola was abducted from her home apartment block.

Benkired, who is homeless, allegedly took revenge on the girl because her mother refused to give her a key to the building.

She is accused of luring Lola into the apartment where she was staying with her sister.

There, Benkired is said to have forced the 12-year-old to undress, wash and perform a sex act before launching a violent attack on the youngster.

Lola was reportedly slashed with a box cutter and scissors before being bound in duct tape and left to die from asphyxiation.

This week, Lola’s mum asked a forensic pathologist whether Lola would have suffered at the end, saying they had been “plagued by the question”.

“She undoubtedly suffered,” was the grim answer.

The courtroom was also shown a picture of Lola’s corpse, with 39 wounds on it, many left the room, but not Lola’s mum.

Authorities said Lola was “vaginally and anally penetrated” while she was still alive, adding that her head was partially severed.

Her body was then stuffed into a plastic trunk and dragged through the streets of Paris.

Benkired was arrested after the young girl’s body was later discovered by a homeless man where it had been dumped.

The now 27-year-old apologised for her “horrible actions” at the opening of the trial, after admitting to the crimes.

She said: “I know I killed a baby, an angel.”

Later, Benkired claimed she had been led to do kill Lola by and old boyfriend, who she pointed at in a video stream into courtroom, and said she had been made to “drink something” which gave her hallucinations.

Speaking in court on Wednesday, Delphine said: “This moment is very important to me. I’m going to tell you about my Lola, my mini-me.
