At least 81 people have been arrested so far. Two suspects who were shot are in custody at Penha Hospital, CNN Brasil added. In total, approximately 2,500 police officers were involved in the operation.
Rio de Janeiro authorities regularly conduct raids in favelas as part of the fight against organized crime. The current operation, however, is the deadliest in the city’s history.
