OUTRAGED guests have claimed they were booted out of their hotel rooms after a top firm filed for bankruptcy.

Stunned visitors even found their belongings packed into plastic bags and thrown out into hallways following the collapse of Marriott Hotels’ partner company.

Sonder, who had been collaborating with Marriott since 2024, was once valued at $1billion and seen as a major rival to rental giant Airbnb.

But on Monday, Marriott terminated its licensing deal with them – plunging the company into chaos and forcing them to file for bankruptcy.

Sonder were forced to shut down as a result and immediately began winding down operations.

But the rapid collapse caught hotel-goers across the world off-guard – with many left in the dark about the sudden closures.

Several guests took to social media to share their experiences being kicked out the premises – some only in the middle of their stays.

One user claimed: “Trying to maintain my composure while dragging my luggage down the street after Marriott Hotels & Sonder Hotels broke up with each other on a random Sunday and told us to get the f**k out of the hotel room we had booked for another three nights in Montreal.”

A couple shared their mind-boggling story, alleging that they were “kicked out of our hotel reservation at Sonders in New York City”.

They said: “Received a message from Sonder giving me less than 24 hours notice to vacate the property because its partnership with Marriott was terminated.

“I’m lucky because my trip ended today… but what are others doing who already paid and had their stays cut short?”

Another guest told Business Insider he and his wife were kicked out halfway through a 17-day stay in New York – and he even had Elite status with Marriott.

He claimed he received emails one day before his eviction informing him that he would have to vacate the premises by 9am the next day.

He said: “We ended up spending several thousand dollars more to find a new place.

“It was very, very disruptive. They treated us so poorly.”

Meanwhile, another traveller claimed their luggage had been manhandled by the time he returned to his Boston apartment on Sunday.

The baffled Sonder guest alleged: “They handled all our personal belongings, toiletries, clothing, computers, electronics.”

“Some they packed into suitcases, and some they put in plastic bags. It was quite shocking and very impersonal.”

And another social media user said online:  “Got kicked out of my hotel today… total nightmare.

“Marriott dropped Sonders, so now I’m basically homeless.”

The shocking collapse comes less than a year after Sonder rebranded as Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy as part of a partnership that allowed it to list rooms on Marriott’s website.

The company offered short-term apartment-style rentals and boutique hotels to customers.

But following the partnership, both companies reportedly struggled to integrate booking systems, leading to what executives branded a “sharp decline in revenue”.

Interim CEO Janice Sears said: “We are devastated to reach a point where liquidation is the only viable path forward.

“Unfortunately, our integration with Marriott International was substantially delayed due to unexpected challenges in aligning our technology frameworks, resulting in significant, unanticipated integration costs, as well as a sharp decline in revenue arising from Sonder’s participation in Marriott’s Bonvoy reservation system.”

The Sun reached out to Marriott Bonvoy for comment.
