A BRIT woman has been killed after a terrifying deadly “tornado” swept through a Portuguese holiday campsite.

The 85-year-old was staying on the site near Albufeira on the Algarve when the freak twister began whipping debris into the air.

Holidaymakers – including dozens of Brits – ran for cover as the storm tore through the site and a nearby hotel flinging masonry into the air and flipping cars.

Authorities said 28 were injured and one person was reported missing as the Parque de campismo de Albufeira site was left devastated.

But the missing person was later found dead under rubble and identified as the British pensioner, whose name has not yet been released.

The “extreme wind phenomenon” at 10.07am was said to be “probably a tornado” and linked to Storm Claudia which rocked the UK on Friday, a Civil Protection source said on Saturday.

A source from the Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command said: “It was a phenomenon of strong winds, an extreme wind phenomenon, that affected two units, a campsite and a hotel unit.”

Storm Claudia has also torn up parts of the UK – with Brits bracing for more rain and flooding this weekend.

Most of the injuries were said to be at the Hotel Eden where 19 were injured including one seriously and at the campsite where two were seriously and one found dead later.

Police later confirmed that a total of 28 people had been hurt including Portuguese, British and Spanish nationals aged between six and 86.
