The Donald Trump Administration secretly authorized the CIA a carry out covert actions in Venezuelaas revealed this Wednesday by the New York Timesciting US officials within the Government.
With this decision, the Republican intensifies the pressure campaign against the regime of Nicolás Madurowhich Washington does not recognize as legitimate and links to drug trafficking networks.
This authorization would allow the CIA to carry out lethal operations inside Venezuela and a series of missions in Caribbean waters, the newspaper maintains, citing several senior US officials.
Trump reported this Tuesday that his country’s Army carried out another attack against a ship in the Caribbean, near the coast of Venezuela, and confirmed the death of “six narcoterrorists.”
The Republican’s message is accompanied by a video where you can see how a small boat is hit by a projectile in an explosion that engulfs it in flames.
This attack joins at least five operations that the United States has carried out since September against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean, three of them near Venezuela and another near the Dominican Republic.
On October 5, Trump himself confirmed the sinking of a ship traveling through the Caribbean and once again suggested that his country could soon move its anti-drug operations from sea to land.
Two days earlier, the Pentagon had announced another military attack in the Caribbean against ships that were supposedly transporting drugs.
The military deployment of the United States in Caribbean waters under the argument of combating drug trafficking has been criticized by the Government of Nicolás Maduro, which considers it a threat of a possible attack against Venezuela.
Trump and several senior officials in his Administration accuse Maduro of being the leader of a drug trafficking network, something that Caracas denies.
