The Peruvian candidate suffered several shots this Tuesday while he was in his vehicle. The three bullets, which hit the window of his car, caused nothing more than scratches from the flying glass. Unharmed, he is now at the police station to file the corresponding complaint.

Belaunde was the victim of the shooting while driving through the Cerro Azul district, in Cañete, according to the former president of the Council of Ministers, Pedro Cateriano. Precisely in Cerro Azul is where he has a business and he was preparing to go to the workplace when he was intercepted by gunfire.

“He is complying with legal procedures before the Police. He is unharmed. The criminals have not achieved their objective,” explained the former prime minister.

“It is a bad start to the campaign. I think that we Peruvians know what violence is. We are unfortunately going through a context of active criminal activity, but we must firmly reject this attack that Rafael Belaunde suffered with bullets in the morning. [sic]”said Cateriano.

The Peruvian candidate is the grandson of former Peruvian president Fernando Belaunde, and has obtained single-digit results in recent polls of presidential candidates. Said general elections in Peru are scheduled to be held on April 12, 2026.
